Sunny Skies Ahead!!

Hello again!  We are super excited to let you all know we will be selling produce at the Wheeler Farm farmer's market this summer and fall.  Here are the dates.  Other general info can be found at the link below.

                        Every Sunday 9am- 2pm beginning June 3- Oct 28

Our kale and spinach transplants are just about ready!  We'll be planting them outside this weekend.
Also, 3 new packages of honey bees arrive in just a few weeks!  We decided to try the Carniolan/Italian hybrid from Jones Bee Co this year.  With 100% loss of our hives last year we have nothing to lose with a little experimentation.  *crossing fingers*

The Weather has been glorious! Enabling us to put cardboard down around the grow boxes as weed barrier, spread some hairy vetch seed in attempt for a early spring nitrogen boost, orchard clean up, and begin re-working more of the back property to set up for flood irrigation.

The Land/ Ground we are working with had been previously covered with at least 4 feet of fill dirt from the city since potentially the 70's. Last season we spent a month with the help of family to remove piles of concrete, asphalt, metal, and random junk. The area we are preparing to cultivate was at one time farm land. We are hopeful to slowly but surely get back down to the mythical sandy loam beneath the junk.

Right now we are concentrating on a small portion of the ground (roughly 80 feet wide by 200 ft long).                   Once the large debris have been removed and we are down to the soil  worthy to grow in , we will send multiple soil samples to get tested and see what we will need to do to begin amending the earth. Also to
find out  if there is any contamination issues due to the junk dirt sitting so long on the original farm land.

Soon We'll be heading to the corn field to start our spring prep. Brush removal, discing the fields, and any repair needed to equipment and irrigation. Stay tuned for more to come on the honey bees, planting progress and other shenanigans!
